Entlebucher Mountain Dog The Entlebucher Mountain Dog (Shepherd Dog from Entlebuch, or Dog of the Alpine Herdsman) is a native of Switzerland, and the smallest of the four tri-colored Swiss Sennenhund breeds. Swiss farmers have historically used the Entlebucher to move cows from pasture to pasture in the Alps. Their keen intelligence, speed and agility also made them useful for the management of other large animals such as horses and hogs. Prized for his agreeable nature, ease of training, and devotion to family, the Entlebucher possesses an excellent work ethic, and the ability to work alone or in harmony with his master. Given a job, he transforms from a lively, high-spirited playmate, to a serious, tireless, self assured dog of commanding presence. Although primarily a drover, Entles excel at competitive sports and are willing and enthusiastic partners in any athletic canine activity chosen by their master. Although originally kept for guarding and herding, today the breed is usually kept as a lively companion. This working breed is extremely rare in both Europe and the United States. General Appearance The Entlebucher is a square, sturdy dog with typical working dog features. It has small, triangular ears and rather small, lively brown eyes. The head is well proportioned to the body, with a strong flat skull. The long jaw is well formed and powerful. The feet are compact supporting its muscular body. The smooth coat is close and harsh with symmetrical markings of black, tan and white. This tricolor coat has white on its toes, tail-tip, chest and blaze; the tan always lies between the black and the white. It has muscular broad hips. The hocks are naturally well angled. The tail is sometimes docked. Temperament The Entlebucher Mountain Dog breed is not recommended for first time dog owners. They are friendly, loyal, and form close attachments to their family. The Entlebucher is a people person dog who loves to be surrounded by his people and friends. Alert and very eager to please. It was first used as a cattle driver, today it is used as a livestock guarder and a companion. The Entlebucher needs a firm, but calm, consistent pack leader who can properly communicate with the canine animal. They do not do well if bored or isolated and prefer to be with their family. The Entlebucher Mountain Dog does best in a home with older considerate children. They do well with other dogs and household pets. This breed is protective of family, home, and territory and will alert to danger or their suspicions by barking. Grooming The Entlebucher Mountain Dog does not do well in warm climates. An easy groom dog. Regular brushing will due. This breed is an average shedder. Occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush to remove loose and dead hair is recommended. Bathing should be done when necessary. It is important to not over-feed this breed, clip nails regularly, and provide dental hygiene. Health Problems and Life Expectancy Certain inbreeding that occurred in 1900s has caused a few congenital defects such as hip dysplasia and Hemolytic anemia. Other health concerns include eye problems and orthopedic problems. They have an average life span of 11- 15 years. Activity Level The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is not recommended for apartment living or sedentary owners. This breed requires an inordinate amount of physical exercise and mental stimulation. Entlebucher Mountain Dog's enjoy such family activities as jogging, walking, and Frisbee. They do best with a large securely fenced yard or rural setting with a job to do. The Entlebucher is not recommended for apartment life.
